Drug Treatment For Tinnitus – Top 3 Medications

drug treatment tinnitusIt goes without saying that tinnitus can be very difficult to eliminate mainly because it is still not very well understood and is thought of as being a symptom of an issue in your body and not an actual disease like cancer or diabetes though I’m sure you would disagree.

But discovering what it is a symptom of can be an almost impossible task. Sure there are some simple reasons that can be fixed such as impacted earwax, ear infection, the use of certain medications, etc, but for most cases of tinnitus, determining what this issue is can be very challenging.

Because there isn’t a set treatment approach for tinnitus, you may have to try various treatment therapies including drug treatment for tinnitus. But keep in mind that though the following 3 medications may be recommended, there is no single medication that will work for everyone because this is a symptom of some other issue which will vary from one person to another.

Because there isn’t one medication that is a cure for tinnitus, most people with tinnitus simply use medications to deal with some of the other issues that may develop from tinnitus such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc. In this sense these medications are used as a way to cope with tinnitus and not necessarily to cure it.

But there is some research into certain medications that has been able to help some sufferers of tinnitus even to the point of eliminating the ringing in ears which include but are not limited to the following three.

Drug treatment for tinnitus

1. Misoprostol (Cytotec)

This is probably the most common drug treatment for tinnitus although it was not originally developed for treating ringing in ears. Its original purpose is to prevent stomach ulcers although some obstetricians controversially also use it to help induce labor in pregnant women or abortion.

A new use for this drug was discovered when a small study showed that study subjects who took this medication and not a placebo showed improvement in tinnitus severity, concentration as well as sleep. Another study reported that there was a decrease in volume or loudness of the tinnitus.

But more research is necessary before this can be used as a definite treatment for tinnitus but if you have tried everything and nothing has worked, you may want to ask your physician about misoprostol.

The downsides of using this drug treatment for tinnitus is that it is very expensive and should not be taken by pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant. If you have heart and inflammatory bowel issues, you should also avoid this medication. It can also cause diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, breathing difficulties, blood clots, flatulence, allergic reaction, constipation, headache, vomiting, etc.

2. Acamprosate (Campral)

This is a drug that is approved for the treatment of alcoholism and one study showed that it may be able to be used for tinnitus treatment. In the placebo controlled study, there was significant improvement in the severity of tinnitus after a period of about 90 day of taking this drug with about 3 subjects who reported that tinnitus was completely eliminated.

But like other drug therapies that are recommended for tinnitus, more research is necessary and is currently underway before this can be recommended as a treatment for tinnitus.

3. Sodium valproate/valproic acid (Depakene)

This medication is used for the treatment of bipolar disorders, seizures, mood disorders as well as depression but a small study found that this medication was effective in suppressing tinnitus. But this is in conflict with another study that showed that it could induce tinnitus which went away as soon as the medication left the blood stream. However, this medication can be used to treat severe cases of tinnitus.

There you have it. Drug treatment for tinnitus while promising, still needs significant research before it can be said for certain that this or that medication can be used for treating tinnitus but this is definitely a conversation to have with your doctor. Many of them are also expensive and come with serious side effects so thy should be a last resort after trying every other methods out there that is recommended for tinnitus including natural remedies.
