Tinnitus can be such a challenge to not only treat but to actually find treatment methods that will work to lessen or eliminate the sounds in the first place. One of the natural methods that can be used to lessen the intensity of tinnitus is with the use of essential oils. Here is what you need to know in order to use essential oils for tinnitus treatment.
What are essential oils?
Before we discuss how to lessen the intensity of tinnitus using essential oils, we need to look at what essential oils are. Essential oils differ from fragrance oils and perfumes.
Essential oils are the liquids that are obtained from the leaves, flowers, roots, bark and other parts of certain plants.
While they are called an oil, they shouldn’t feel oily to the touch. If they feel oily, they are poor quality and contain other additives. Most essential oils are clear but certain types such as orange, lemon, patchouli, etc may have a slight color to them.
Essential oils are usually very potent and most of them need to be diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, olive, apricot kernel, grapeseed, castor, coconut oil, jojoba, etc, before they can be applied to the skin otherwise they will burn or irritate the skin.
Essential oils represent the true essences of the plant they are obtained from and the use of essential oils for healing goes back thousands of years when it was discovered that certain aromas can be healing for the body when the essential oil is inhaled (aromatherapy). There are also many physical benefits when essential oils (mixed with carrier oils) are applied to the skin.
As mentioned previously, it can be difficult to stop the sounds that are produced by tinnitus and many treatment therapies both conventional and alternative may only be able to help lessen the intensity of tinnitus and not eliminate the sounds entirely. This is because tinnitus is thought to be a symptom of a problem in the body and if this problem can be identified and fixed, tinnitus may go away.
Unfortunately, the causes of these sounds can be next to impossible to determine in order to fix it. So using various therapies can help to take your focus off the sounds especially if they are loud and constant. This is where essential oils come in.

How to use essential oils for tinnitus
Do not apply essential oils directly into the ear!
Apply 2 to 3 drops of the essential oil onto the ear lobe, on the bone behind the ear and on the neck. Gently massage these oils and inhale deeply as you apply them to each of these areas. While you should not apply essential oils directly into the ear, you can apply a few drops on a cotton ball and insert this into the ear canal overnight. Remove the cotton ball in the morning and clean out the ear.
If you have swelling and pain associated with tinnitus, you can use helichrysum essential oil alone without a carrier oil to help drain the ear. Apply this oil to the ear lobe and behind the ear and gently massage.
